The Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia (SSRA) was established on November 29, 1920. In December 1921, a set of 16 stamps with original designs based on the projects of the artist Sarkis Khachatryan was printed (the so-called first Constantinople issue). The stamps were printed by lithography on ordinary paper, both perforated and imperforate.

In April 1922, all stamps of the first Constantinople issue were overprinted with numeric handstamps in black or red ink showing the new denomination and were put into circulation. Stamps are also found with the new denomination written by hand in red and violet ink. Such stamps are of philatelic interest only on postal items and on pieces cut from them bearing clear postal cancellations.

Forgeries of foreign origin are known for all stamps of both the first and the second Constantinople issues. They differ from genuine stamps in the printing method and in details of the design. All stamps of the second issue are found with fake perforation.
