In 1930, the collective farm "Lenin's Path" was established in the village; in 1960 it was renamed "Red Gardener". According to 1963 data, it was part of the collective farm "Zvezda". In 1969, on the basis of the collective farm "Zvezda", the state farm "Zvezda" was organized (the village of Kazyli, the villages of Kosteneevo and Svinogorye).

In 1995–2001, it was the agricultural production cooperative "Zvezda"; in 2001–2008, the limited liability company "Gazovik"; since 2008, the limited liability company agricultural enterprise "Sapphire"; since 2016, the limited liability company "Agrofirma "Kosteneevo"".
Residents mainly work at the limited liability company "Agrofirma "Kosteneevo"" (field crop farming, dairy cattle breeding).
The village of Kosteneevo has been known since 1680.
In the 18th to the first half of the 19th century, residents belonged to the category of state peasants. Their main occupations in this period were agriculture and livestock breeding; horticulture, day labor, barge hauling, tanning, and wool-beating crafts were also widespread.
In 1722, the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist was built in the village (rebuilt in 1830–1836 according to a standard design by architect K. A. Ton; closed in the late 1930s; resumed services in 1944; a monument of religious architecture).
In the 1860s, a zemstvo hospital was opened: it had a physician and 2 feldshers on staff and was designed for 20 patients. In the 1890s, a complex of zemstvo hospital buildings was constructed (three one-story standard semi-stone buildings have survived).
In the early 20th century, the village had a church, a zemstvo hospital, a library (since 1896), and a one-class zemstvo school (since the 1870s, housed in its own building; in the 1920s it taught 51 boys and 25 girls).
During this period, the land allotment of the rural community amounted to 3,500.6 dessiatinas.
