October 21 — the Union of Brest was concluded, under which the bishops of the Orthodox Church in the Polish territories recognized the authority of the Pope over them. In 1595, the bishops of the Kyiv Metropolis appealed to the Pope, asking to be accepted under his jurisdiction. It was assumed that such a union would strengthen the position of the Orthodox clergy and eliminate disagreements between the two Christian confessions in the Ukrainian-Belarusian lands of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The union, signed in Rome, was also approved in Brest in 1596 at a church council.
