In the early 1990s, many issues appeared purportedly released on behalf of regions of Ukraine that were never used in postal circulation and had a "fantasy" character. These issues consisted of various overprints applied to postage stamps of the USSR and Ukraine, as well as to non-postal stamps and forgeries of original designs.
Stamps were overprinted in the name of Crimea, Donbas, Polissia, Zakarpattia, and other regions of Ukraine, as well as in the name of Ukrainian cities, for example Chornobyl, Feodosiia, Sumy, Myrhorod, and others. The overprints mostly featured an image of the trident, a new denomination, and the inscription "Post of Ukraine" or the name of the city.
