Anadyr is a port city on the shore of Anadyr Bay. Despite being the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, it is not populated exclusively by representatives of the small indigenous peoples of the Far North. Here, as in Chukotka overall, people of different nationalities live side by side, but the culture and traditions of the Chukchi and the Eskimos make up a large part of the city’s cultural life.
Until this year, Chukotka was a border zone: entry for people without local registration in the autonomous okrug was allowed only with special permits. They had to be arranged about two months before the trip. These rules are still in effect for some areas of Chukotka, but now any citizen of Russia can travel to Anadyr carrying only a passport.
