May 5 — The coffin with the body of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov was transported from Pyatigorsk to Tarkhany, to the Arsenyev family vault.

May 21 — The first volume of *Dead Souls*, Gogol’s great satire, was published.

August 29 — The First Opium War ended with the Treaty of Nanking between Great Britain and China. Under the treaty, China ceded Hong Kong to Great Britain, opened five ports to British ships, and also paid 23 million dollars in war indemnities.

October 22 — Jeweler Gustav Fabergé opened a jewelry workshop in Saint Petersburg.
