11 October — private trade was abolished (except at collective-farm markets). All private shops were nationalized. During the liquidation, all property of kulak peasants was confiscated; they were exiled to Siberia, while urban “NEPmen,” as well as their family members, were deprived of political rights (“disenfranchised”); many were subjected to prosecution. But the official ban could not completely drive non-state trade out of public life. The shadow economy remained a characteristic feature of Soviet reality for a long time.
