25 July — by order of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the Ukrainian statesman Vasyl Kochubey was executed.

Vasyl Leontiovych Kochubey owned vast land holdings with serf peasants in Left-Bank Ukraine. Under Hetman Mazepa he held the highest offices in the Hetmanate government: General Scribe and General Judge.

As part of the Ukrainian Cossack forces, he took part in the Azov campaigns. Having learned of Mazepa's secret negotiations with the Swedish King Charles XII and the Polish King Leszczynski—aimed at separating Ukraine from Russia and placing it under the rule of Sweden and Poland—Kochubey repeatedly warned Peter I of the impending treason. However, the tsar, trusting Mazepa without reserve, regarded the reports of his betrayal as slander and handed over to the hetman Kochubey, who had fled to Russia, and his like-minded ally Colonel Iskra. They were brutally tortured and executed in the village of Borshchahivka, where Mazepa's camp was located.
