The tram system of Rostov-on-Don is one of the oldest in Russia. The predecessor of the tram in Rostov-on-Don was a horse-drawn railway, opened in 1887 and owned by a Belgian joint-stock company. The German, and later Belgian, concessionaires implementing the horse-tram project decided to install a European-gauge track—1435 mm wide—so that European tramcars, including second-hand ones, could be supplied to Rostov without problems. Today, this track gauge is unique in Russia.
