25 January — for the first time, a solemn coronation ceremony was held in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The Grand Prince of Moscow, Ivan Vasilyevich, became the first official Russian tsar, Ivan IV.

This coronation was an act of great political significance for Russia. The title of tsar testified to the autocratic nature of its holder’s power. Moreover, the tsar’s title made it possible to take a substantially different position in diplomatic relations with Western Europe. The grand-princely title was translated as “prince” or “grand duke.” The title “tsar,” by contrast, was either not translated at all or was translated as “emperor.” Thus the Russian autocrat stood on a par with the only emperor in Europe—the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

Ivan IV’s coins show a transformation of the horseman’s image—from an abstract symbol of Russian statehood to a depiction of the autocrat endowed with specific features of a ruler. The image of the mounted rider on the kopeck combined both the figure of the sovereign and the state coat of arms, indicating the coin’s state affiliation. A canonized type of the tsar’s image was created in the form of a mounted warrior.
