During the hostilities between the armies of the Republic of Lithuania, Poland, and Germany on one side, and the army of the so-called Lithuanian-Belorussian SSR on the other, Lithuania asserted its claims to the Grodno District, which lay within the sphere of interests of the Polish state.

One expression of Lithuanian sovereignty was the appearance of a series of postage stamps known as β€œSouth Lithuania, Grodno issue.”

The stamps apparently remained in circulation until the end of April 1919, that is, until the entry of Polish-German troops into the region and the establishment of their own postal service.

A black and red overprint on Russian stamps in the Lithuanian and Belarusian languages.
