16 January 1873 — the Zemstvo post of Gryazovets Uyezd (Vologda Governorate) was opened. Mail was sent from the uyezd center, the town of Gryazovets, to the volost administrations of the uyezd once a week. At first only ordinary mail was accepted; from 1898, registered and money mail were also accepted. To pay for the delivery of private correspondence, Zemstvo postage stamps were used: 2 kopecks (until 1881), then 4 kopecks, and from 1898 from 1 to 7 kopecks.

In 1873–1880 the stamps were produced at the uyezd administration using a hand stamp. The design was circular; in the center were the coats of arms of the governorate and the uyezd.

From 1881 the stamps featured postal-themed designs (a Zemstvo postman, postal attributes).

From 1902 the stamps were printed at EZGB and in local printing houses. They were canceled in ink (by crossing out, by writing the date, or the surname of a Zemstvo employee), as well as with circular, oval, and single-line handstamps.
