The Uprising on Senate Square

Members of the Northern Society believed there could be no better moment to raise an uprising and demand a constitution. They tried to convince the soldiers that Constantine had not abdicated at all. They managed to incite the Moscow Guards Regiment; several companies of the Guards Naval Crew followed its example, along with individual officers and enlisted men from other military units. At the call of revolutionary-minded officers, more than 3,000 soldiers came out to the square. Gathering on Senate Square, the rebels declared that they considered Constantine the rightful emperor, refused to swear allegiance to Nicholas, and demanded a constitution.
