The tram system of Rostov-on-Don is one of the oldest in Russia. The predecessor of the tram in Rostov-on-Don was a horse-drawn railway, opened in 1887 and owned by a Belgian joint-stock company. German, and later Belgian, concessionaires implementing the horsecar project decided to use the European track gauge, i.e., 1435 mm wide, so that European tramcars, including second-hand ones, could be supplied to Rostov without difficulty. Today, this track gauge is unique in Russia.
