The purpose of issuing metal tavern tokens was the numerous cases of deceiving tavern visitors. Establishment staff charged visitors—often intoxicated—a much larger amount, adding extra portions to the order. The owners began commissioning special metal tokens. Visitors purchased the tokens at the entrance and could pay only with them; thus, the staff lost the opportunity to profit from deception. However, there were cases when the tokens were made by the staff themselves, which forced all sorts of complications in production—for example, special counterstamps were applied, available only to a single die-cutter.
