World War I (1914–1918) brought immense suffering to the people of the Russian Empire. 15.8 million people were mobilized to the front, and the number of refugees reached nearly 7 million. Soldiers’ families, widows, and orphans needed assistance. For this reason, during World War I philanthropy—charitable activity—developed actively.
