The multicolored letters HCRK (Kharkiv Central Workers' Cooperative) glittered in every district. In Kyiv, private shops and small stores still predominated. Mother bought milk, butter, curd cheese, ham, and sour cream only from Nazarenko on Prorezna Street. And to my agitation against the NEPmen she replied simply: "Your workers' cooperative may sell things cheaper, but it's rot, spoiled stuff, and they even get cheeky. At Nazarenko's everything is fresh, and they trust you to pay later." I myself knew that the pastries and candies at Fruzinsky's confectionery were better than in the workers' cooperative and than in the school buffet. But in Kharkiv, in the confectioneries of UKO (Ukrainian Confectionery Union), even plain milk toffees seemed to me sweeter than NEP truffles.
