The royal court moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg. From that moment, St. Petersburg came to be regarded as the capital of the Russian Empire. In the fortress, according to Trezzini’s design, construction of the stone Peter and Paul Cathedral began (before that, the cathedral had been wooden). By the end of the cathedral’s rebuilding, the fortress began to be called the Peter and Paul Fortress, and the city itself St. Petersburg.

February 19 — Peter I married Catherine. This marriage broke all traditions: a completely low-born woman appeared at court, with no formal grounds whatsoever to marry the Tsar of Russia.

A general instruction regarding quarantines. Governors and voivodes, upon receiving news of an epidemic abroad, were to detain arrivals at the checkpoints, but the length of this quarantine was not specified; likewise, with internal regions where an epidemic had appeared, all communication was to be cut off; houses in which illness occurred were ordered to be burned together with the horses, the livestock, and all belongings, after removing the people to separate, empty places; anyone who tried to slip through the checkpoints was threatened with the gallows.
