In February 1918, Soviet power was proclaimed in Zvenyhorodka, but already in March 1918 Zvenyhorodka was occupied by Austro-German troops. Later, in early June 1918, Zvenyhorodka became the center of an armed uprising against the Austro-Hungarian and German interventionists and their collaborators. On June 7 the rebels completely surrounded it, and on June 9 they captured Zvenyhorodka by storm, after which they held it until June 13, 1918, when the German command sent large army units here. Subsequently, Zvenyhorodka lay within the civil war combat zone, but in early March 1919 it was taken by units of the Red Army, and Soviet power was restored.
In 1923, Zvenyhorodka became a district center; in 1927, an urban-type settlement; and in 1938, a city.
