April 4 — Attempt by D. V. KARAKOZOV on Alexander II. While the Emperor was walking in the Summer Garden, the student Dmitry Karakozov fired at him.

General M. Muravyov was appointed head of a special commission to investigate the crime. No conspiracy was uncovered; only the existence of a Moscow youth circle, insignificant in means and strength, was revealed, led by Karakozov’s cousin Ishutin. The circle consisted of very young people who did not seek regicide. Those members who knew of Karakozov’s plan considered it reckless and ruinous and made considerable efforts to prevent him from carrying it out.

On September 15, Karakozov was hanged, and all his comrades and conspirators were exiled to Siberia.
