The Rostov-on-Don tram system is one of the oldest in Russia. The predecessor of the tram in Rostov-on-Don was a horse-drawn railway, opened in 1887 and owned by a Belgian joint-stock company. German, and later Belgian, concessionaires, while implementing the horsecar project, decided to adopt the European track gauge of 1,435 mm so that European tramcars, including second-hand ones, could be supplied to Rostov without difficulty. Today, this is a unique track gauge in Russia.
