Kyiv. Provincial Society for Assistance in Liquidating Illiteracy named after Lenin. Down with Illiteracy!**
The All-Ukrainian voluntary association "Down with Illiteracy" named after V. I. Lenin (Ukrainian: Товариство «Геть неписьменність» імені В. І. Леніна) was founded in 1923 based on a resolution of the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee (VUTsIK) dated October 19. Its goal was to support the public education authorities in eradicating illiteracy and semi-literacy. The head of the organization was the Chairman of the VUTsIK, G. I. Petrovsky.
By 1925, the society had 1,500 primary organizations (59 thousand members), and by 1934 — already 10 thousand cells (about 1 million members). The main grassroots work was carried out by teachers, students, high school seniors, and all those who had an education. The organization involved the general public and public funds, established literacy schools, study circles, conducted individual lessons, sometimes using certain coercive measures. It published propaganda posters, instructional leaflets, textbooks, the newspaper "Down with Illiteracy!" and the magazine "For Literacy." Classes were conducted in the students' native language, and about 4 million people were covered by the education. The society's activities were coordinated with the work of the All-Ukrainian Extraordinary Commission for the Liquidation of Illiteracy. Three republican congresses of the society took place (in 1927, 1929, and 1932).
The organization ceased its activities in 1936, as it was officially declared that illiteracy among the population had been completely eliminated.
