January 3 — The Fall of the "Krasnoyarsk Republic".




January 9 — In Vladivostok, sailors seize a weapons warehouse, marking the beginning of unrest.
January 11 — The start of an uprising in Vladivostok, proclamation of the so-called "Vladivostok Republic".



January 22 — The "Chita Republic" is suppressed by Tsarist troops.



March 4 — The government grants workers the right to form trade unions but denies them the right to strike.
April 4 — Elections to the First State Duma.



April 23 — Nicholas II approves a new version of the "Fundamental Laws of the Russian Empire," which reaffirmed the principle of autocracy and limited the powers of the Duma.
April 27 — Grand opening of the First State Duma in the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg. S.A. Muromtsev (Cadet) becomes its chairman.



May 6 — Nicholas II proclaims the Fundamental Law, reaffirming the principles of autocracy.
May 10 — The First State Duma begins its work.
May 13 — The Duma calls on the Tsarist government to implement democratic reforms; Prime Minister Goremykin states that the Duma has no authority to do so.
June 1-3 — The Bialystok pogrom. Three days of anti-Semitic violence.
June 18 — The Markovo Republic ceases to exist.
June — Appointment of P.A. Stolypin (first as Minister of Internal Affairs, then as Chairman of the Council of Ministers).



July 8 (June 25, O.S.) — Decree dissolving the First State Duma (it had sat for 72 days). P.A. Stolypin is appointed Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
July 10 (July 9-10) — A group of deputies from the dissolved Duma (mostly Cadets) sign the Vyborg Appeal to the population, calling for passive resistance (non-payment of taxes, refusal of conscripts).
July 15-28 — Uprising in the Sveaborg fortress (Finland), suppressed by government troops.
July 21 — Assassination of Samara governor I.L. Blok by revolutionaries.



July 31 — Assassination of M.Ya. Gertsenshtein, a member of the First Duma.



August 12 (July 25, O.S.) — P.A. Stolypin announces the start of agrarian reform (creation of a land bank for peasants).
August 12 — Assassination attempt on P.A. Stolypin by Socialist Revolutionary maximalists at his dacha on Aptekarsky Island in St. Petersburg. The explosion kills 30 people and injures Stolypin's children, but the Prime Minister himself is unharmed.



August 19 — Decree establishing courts-martial for expedited legal proceedings in cases of serious crimes.
September 17 — A two-day strike begins in Baku.
September 25 — Birth of composer Dmitri Shostakovich.



September 29 — Members of the St. Petersburg Soviet are sentenced to exile in Siberia (including L. Trotsky).



October 13 (September 30, O.S.) — G. Rasputin pays his first visit to the family of Nicholas II.



November 9 (October 27, O.S.) — Issuance of a decree allowing peasants to leave the commune and consolidate land into personal property (individual farmsteads and cuts). The beginning of the practical stage of the Stolypin agrarian reform.
December 19 — Birth of Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev.

April 29 — The Nobel Prize is awarded to J.J. Thomson for his investigation of the passage of electricity through gases, considered official recognition of the discovery of the electron.



August 16 — A powerful earthquake in Chile destroys Valparaiso and Santiago.



September 18 — A typhoon in Hong Kong claims the lives of about 10,000 people.



October — The Coca-Cola company in the USA stops adding cocaine to the drink, replacing it with caffeine.
