During World War I, Zawiercie was an industrial settlement with a population of 30,000, and only on July 1, 1915, thanks to the German occupiers, it was granted city rights. After the occupation of the Kingdom of Poland in August 1915 by German and Austro-Hungarian troops, the Zawiercie area remained under the administration of the German and Austro-Hungarian authorities.
