In 1604, the impostor known as False Dmitry I began his campaign toward Moscow. He claimed to be Tsarevich Dmitry, the son of Ivan the Terrible, who had supposedly miraculously survived and was believed to have died in Uglich in 1591. False Dmitry I received support from the Polish-Lithuanian nobility and part of the Cossacks, which allowed him to raise an army and begin his advance on Moscow.
