In August, Russian troops under the command of Peter I and Boris Sheremetev successfully besieged and captured the Swedish fortress of Narva. This was an important event, as Narva was a strategically significant point on the route to the Baltic Sea.
In July, Russian forces also captured the city of Dorpat (now Tartu in Estonia), which was an important fortified stronghold in Livonia.
