5 April β after the allied troops of Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Great Britain entered Paris, the French Emperor Napoleon I abdicated the throne. The Allies allowed him to retain the title of emperor, granted him the island of Elba in the Mediterranean Sea as his possession, guaranteed him an annual income of 2 million francs, and provided a guard of 400 volunteers. On 20 April, the emperor held a review of the guard that remained loyal to him, bade it farewell, and eight days later departed for Elba.
