In January 1919, in the city of Liepaja, Field Post Office No. 168 of the German 8th Army overprinted the German name of the city, "Libau," on its existing stock of Germania stamps. The overprint was applied by hand using two different handstamps; for the smaller one, ink in two colors was used—violet and red. Inverted overprints exist. The stamps were used by civilians and cancelled with field post postmarks. The postal administration in Berlin prohibited further overprinting, but allowed the use of those already produced. The post office operated until March 31, 1919.
