In the past, the Lodz Industrial District was the largest concentration of the textile industry in Poland and one of the largest in the world.

The emergence of the Lodz Industrial District dates back to the 1820s. In 1820, as a result of government resolutions of the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland, Lodz was included among the factory towns of the Kalisz-Mazovia Industrial District. Favorable natural and legal conditions marked the beginning of rapid industrial development in Lodz, which continued until the 1990s. Since 1990, the Lodz Industrial District has experienced an economic crisis caused by a sharp decline in production in the light industry that dominates the region, which in turn was caused by: the collapse of the Eastern market, the growth of competitive imports, and the slow process of adapting state-owned enterprises to market conditions.
