The Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is listed in the Red Data Book of Russia. It is a tropical relict species—the plant was widespread during the Tertiary period, when the climate was milder. Almost the entire plant can be eaten; in addition, some of its parts are used in traditional medicine.
