The school was founded in 1873 on the initiative of the city head, A. M. Baikov. The educational institution was named "Petrovsky" in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Peter I.
Only boys studied here; the school had its own uniform, and the course of study lasted 6 years.
The "Petrovsky" Realschule was not funded by the state Treasury; instead, it was maintained thanks to the local city community, the provincial Zemstvo affairs administrative committee, and fees collected for the right to study.
In 1895, Baron P. N. Wrangel graduated from the institution. Baron Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel was a Russian military commander, a participant in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, and one of the main leaders of the White movement during the Civil War. Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army in Crimea and Poland.
In the 1920s, with the arrival of the new authorities, Realschulen in the country were abolished. A school named after Karl Marx came to be located in the Petrovsky building.
