October 2 — Catherine II approved the sentence of Saltychikha. It was ordered to deprive her of noble status; henceforth it was forbidden to call her either by her husband’s surname or by her father’s surname, and she was to be named as Darya Nikolayeva; she was to be brought up onto the scaffold, a board with the inscription “tormentress and murderess” was to be hung around her neck, and after she had stood with it for an hour, she was to be confined forever in a dark earthen cell in one of the women’s monasteries. Two weeks later the sentence was carried out. “Saltychikha” was imprisoned in the Ivanovsky Monastery. She remained there for more than thirty years and died in November 1801, tormented by bouts of madness.
