Issue of postage stamps for the World's Fair in Paris of 1867.
An incident of considerable international and political significance occurred at the exhibition: on May 25, Emperor Alexander II, returning from a parade together with Napoleon III and his sons, Grand Dukes Alexander and Vladimir, was the target of an assassination attempt by an эмигранта and activist in the Polish liberation movement, Antoni Berezowski. While leaving the Longchamp racecourse, Berezowski approached the carriage and fired at Alexander Nikolaevich, but he was stopped in time; the bullets hit a horse, and the Pole was apprehended. This incident, which took place on French territory, is cited among the reasons that hindered further rapprochement between France and Russia on the eve of the Franco-Prussian War.
