Irina Mikhailovna, a Russian tsarevna, was the eldest of the seven daughters of Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich from his second marriage. She was betrothed to Christian Valdemar, an illegitimate son of the Danish King Christian IV, who came to Moscow to marry the tsarevna and live in Russia. According to Moscow views of the time, a tsarevna could be married to a prince only if he accepted Orthodoxy, and necessarily through rebaptism; this was proposed to the groom, but he категорically refused rebaptism and intended to leave Moscow at once. Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich, having taken a liking to the prince, tried to persuade him, and as a result disputes about the faith arose between Moscow learned men and Pastor Felgaber, who accompanied the prince. The disputes did not lead to the desired result: the following year Valdemar left Moscow.

Ivan Kolesnikov, a Siberian ataman, was sent from Yeniseisk with a detachment of 100 men to check on Lake Baikal and silver ore. After traveling along the Angara to the mouth of the Osa River, he founded a fort there. The next year he set out for Baikal, but was able to reach only the northwestern shore.

In Tomsk, grain rations were replaced with cash payments; the city had enough market grain, but salt was used for payments for a long time.
