3 January — the Traverse Islands were discovered by the Russian expedition of Bellingshausen and Lazarev.

28 January — Antarctica was discovered by the Russian circumnavigation expedition of the sloops "Vostok" and "Mirny".

5 March — after discovering Antarctica, Faddey Bellingshausen set course for Australia to repair the ships. After the necessary work, he devoted the entire summer to sailing the seas of Oceania, where he discovered 17 previously unknown islands.

28 May — Pushkin arrived in Yekaterinoslav. This year Pushkin will write "Ruslan and Lyudmila".

26 February — Victor Hugo, a French poet, writer, and dramatist, was born.

In early May, a fire broke out in Tsarskoye Selo at the Catherine Palace. About half of the palace burned down: the church, the lyceum, the rooms of Empress Maria Feodorovna, and the sovereign's quarters. Many soldiers ran in to fight the fire, but all with bare hands.

Ten minutes after the fire began, burning embers flew onto the house of the historian Karamzin as well. His wife, Katerina Andreyevna, gathered the children and told her husband to save the papers. Three times the roof caught fire; it was put out, and then the wind changed.

Morozov, Savva Vasilyevich, bought freedom from serfdom together with his sons. He would become a well-known Russian capitalist, owner of textile factories.
