May 7 — the grand opening of Moscow University took place. It was founded thanks to the efforts of the outstanding polymath scientist and the first Russian academician, Mikhail Lomonosov. After Empress Elizabeth Petrovna reviewed the proposal for the new educational institution presented by Ivan Shuvalov and Mikhail Lomonosov, she signed a decree establishing the university in January 1755.
