April 4 — Moscow denied visas to Swedish representatives who were to present the Nobel Prize in Literature to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
May 16 — Russian poet Joseph Brodsky was ordered to leave the USSR. In a letter addressed to Brezhnev, he wrote: "It is bitter for me to leave Russia. I believe I will return. Poets always return — in the flesh or on paper."
