15 February — the completion of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. According to the official version, Lieutenant General Boris Gromov became the last Soviet serviceman to cross the border between the two countries over the Friendship Bridge. In reality, both Soviet servicemen captured by the mujahideen and border guard units covering the withdrawal remained in Afghanistan, returning to USSR territory only in the second half of the day on 15 February. KGB Border Troops of the USSR carried out tasks to protect the Soviet–Afghan border with separate units on Afghan territory until April 1989.

13 March — the World Wide Web (WWW), better known as the Internet, was invented. The inventor of the Internet is considered to be the English scientist Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), who submitted to their department head a document titled “Information Management: A Proposal,” which set out the basic principles of the WWW.

9 October — the first TV session by A. Kashpirovsky aired on Central Television of the USSR.

9 November — on the night of 9–10 November, free passage for citizens from East to West Berlin was opened. The demolition of the Berlin Wall begins.

13 December — the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) of V. V. Zhirinovsky was established.
